Selecting and Downloading Information
- You have by now looked at a lot of different websites and printed them out.
- Sometimes, you want to use the information in a document, save information from a website or download a file.
Your turn! Copy and Paste
- One of the easiest ways to make use of information from an Internet page, is to copy and paste it into a document
- Click on this website - www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/. This is the BBC recipe search.
- Search for a recipe for a dish that you like or would like to know how to cook
- When you have found a recipe that you like, click on it to see the ingredients
- You can copy and paste the recipe into a Word document and build up your own recipe book!
- Select just the ingredients and method using the mouse:
- Right-click on the highlighted text and click on copy
- Open Microsoft Word (or Word Pad) from the Start menu
- Type in the name for the recipe and press enter
- Click on Edit|Paste
- Your recipe will appear:
- Save your recipe by clicking on File|Save As… (check with your tutor where to save your work)
Your turn! Save/Copy images
- The BBC recipe site was great, but it didn't have a good picture of the dish to go with the recipe
- You can easily find images on just about any subject using Google image search.
- Here's the link to Google image search - images.google.co.uk
- Type in the name of your dish and press enter
- A number of images will be displayed:
- Click on one of the images you like
- Then on the next screen, click on the text see full size image:
- Finally you will see the full size image on its own
- Right-click on the image and then choose Save picture as… and save it to the same place as your recipe:
- The image has now been downloaded to your computer
- It is just as easy to copy and paste the image into your document too:
- Right-click on the image again, but this time choose copy
- Go back to your Word document and place the cursor underneath the title, but before the ingredients list
- Click on Edit|Paste and your picture should appear. You might need to resize it:
- Save the Word document again
- Print your Word document.
Your turn! Download a file
- You can use the Internet to download all sorts of files to your computer.
- Popular files to download are:
- Documents - these are often saved in PDF format for easy viewing and printing
- Music - eg iTunes
- Video clips
- Games
- Computer applications
- A link to a file looks like any other hyperlink, but when you click on it, the file will open in the appropriate program.
- Here is a link to a PDF file: LLS_Map.pdf
- It is a map of how to get to the Lifelong Learning and Skills office
- Click on the link, it should open in Acrobat Reader
- Print the map..
- You can save (download) a file by right-clicking on the link:
- Close the map file
- Right-click on the link and choose Save target as…
- A file box appears. Save the file with your recipe and image.
- Another box appears with options to open the file, open the folder containing the file, or to just close the box:
- Click on close.
