Lesson 3

Search the web

  • There are many occasions when you will need to search the Internet
  • Sometimes you don’t know, or can’t work out a web address
  • Other times you want to find something out, but you don’t know where to look
  • In these cases you would use a Search Engine
  • These are websites that have catalogued much of the Internet for you. Type in one or more key words and the search engine will find you a website with matching information
  • The world’s most popular search engine is Google
  • Others include Yahoo!, Lycos, Ask and MSN Search
  • If you click on the search icon on the Internet Explorer toolbar, you would use the MSN search
  • It is better to use the UK version of these search engines as they will be able to find more relevant information from UK sites only.

Your turn!

  1. Click here to open a blank page for this exercise
  2. Try finding the Meadowhall web site by typing in the web address www.meadowhall.com (this is the same ending used by the Crystal Peaks website).
  3. Is this the correct site for shoppers? No!
  4. Go to the Google UK website by using your favourites menu:
    1. Type Meadowhall into the search box in the middle of the screen
    2. Click on the circle next to Pages from the UK
    3. Click on Search:

    4. You will see a page of search results:
      google-search-results.png
    5. Usually the website at the top of the list is the best match, but it's worth looking at the results in detail:
      google-search-results-detail.png
  5. Whenever you search, look carefully at the results, especially the web address in green.
  6. Print out the first page of these search results.
  7. Click on the link to the Meadowhall Centre website – is it the right site? It should be! If it is print it out.
  8. Try and find the following information using Google. Type in key words that describe the information you are looking for. For each one print out the first page only of the correct website, then pass to your tutor for checking:
    1. A map of the country (or town) where you were born
    2. A map of the supertram routes in Sheffield
    3. How many cinemas there are in Sheffield
    4. How much council tax costs in Sheffield
    5. How much a Travelmaster monthly bus ticket costs for travel within Sheffield

Summary

You should now be able to:

  • Search for information using Google
  • Understand what the search results mean
