Lesson 10
eMail 3
This final email activity will show you even more about your email system.
Sending Attachments
- An attachment is the word for a file that you send to someone by email
- They are used a lot in business as it makes it easier for people to share documents
- They are useful if you want to send a photo to your friends or family
- Login to your email
- Compose a new email
- Select a classmate or your tutor to receive the email and ask for their email address
- You are going to attach the recipe that you downloaded from the Internet in Lesson 5:
- Write a short message eg "Here is my favourite recipe for Chicken curry"
- Scroll down the page until you see the attachments box:
- Click on browse and a file dialog will appear:
- Find your recipe (word document) that you saved previously, click on it and then click on open
- The file is now attached. Click on send to send the file with the attachment:
Opening Attachments
- If you have been sent an attachment, it is very easy to open or download it.
- Login and check you email for new messages
- If you have a new message with an attachment, you will see a paperclip on the e-mail line:
- Click on the email to open it.
- The attachment is shown at the top of the email. Click on it to open or download it:
- A dialog appears with a choice to open or save the file:
- If you choose to open the file, it will open in the appropriate program (in this case Microsoft Word). If you select save, you need to choose where you want to save it.
- That's it!
Saving emails
- With inbox.com you get 5GB of storage space - that's over a DVDs worth of storage or over 7 CDs worth
- So you are unlikely to run out of room unless you upload a lot of pictures or other files for storage
- Nevertheless, sometimes you might want to save an email to your computer.
- Login to your email
- Open an email you want to save to your computer - perhaps one of your Google alerts might be a good idea
- Click on more details in the top-right corner
- Click on Open HTML in new window:
- Your message will appear as a web page
- Now you can save it by clicking on File|Save As
- Type in a suitable filename, and then choose web archive as the file type:
- Click on Save
- You can now access that message from your computer, even if you are not connected to the Internet.
Summary
You can now:
- Send a file via email as an attachment
- Open or download an email that has been sent to you
- Save an email for offline use
