  • Now that you have worked through all the lessons, this is a chance to show your tutor what you have learned
  • This project will cover all you have learned so far over 2 assessed tasks and a short quiz
  • When you have completed this project, you will have finished the course

Assessment Task 1

Scenario: You are working in a publicity department for a local college. There is an open day and you have been given the task of finding a firm who can print the college’s name and phone number on some balloons. The college has allocated a budget of £150 for balloons and wants as many balloons printing as possible for that price.

  1. Your manager will email you to begin this task.
  2. Add the manager’s email address to your address book/contacts list
  3. Search the web for the best deal on balloon printing (look at about 3 different UK-based companies):
    1. Print out your web search results - indicate on the printout which websites you visited
    2. Print the page from the company you have chosen showing the prices of the printing
    3. Bookmark this website
    4. Email your manager with details of what you have found
  4. Your manager will email you back with further instructions and a document to fill out:
    1. Save the attached document and fill it in using Microsoft Word.
    2. Save and print out the completed document using the filename requested by your manager.
    3. Add the finance manager’s email address to your address book
    4. Send the email and attachment to the finance manager, copying in the publicity manager and attach the completed document.
  5. Print out each email you have sent and received during this task.
  6. Place all your printouts in order and write page numbers on the bottom corner.
  7. Complete the first part of the Assessment Task Cover Sheet

Assessment Task 2

Scenario: You are working for the IT services department for a small company. A number of staff have been given laptops so they can work from home. Recently there has been a spate of virus attacks and spam emails affecting the company laptops, as when employees are working from home, they are not protected by the company firewall. You have been asked to send some tips on Internet and email security to the staff.

  1. The IT Manager will email you first to begin this task
  2. Add the IT manager’s email address to your address book/contacts list
  3. Use the Internet to research safe use of Internet and email:
    1. Print out your web search results
    2. Print the pages from any website you have used in your research
    3. Bookmark each site you have used
  4. Summarise the most important points about Internet and email security in Microsoft Word, Word Pad or Notepad:
    1. Save the document
    2. Send an email to the IT manager and attach your document.
  5. Act on any instructions the IT manager might give you in reply
  6. Print out the final version of the document/attachment
  7. Print out each email you have sent and received during this task
  8. Place all your printouts in order and write page numbers on the bottom corner that continue on from the last page number in task 1.
  9. Complete the second part of the Assessment Task Cover Sheet

Quiz

  4. Save the completed quiz file and print it out.
  5. Give the printout to your tutor for checking.

Complete the portfolio

A number of tasks need completing to make sure that your portfolio contains all the evidence that is needed to achieve the two units:

  • Internet and Intranets
  • Email
  1. Provide a screen print of your contacts list showing the 2 email addresses you added for each task. Do this by:
    1. Opening your email account and going into your contacts
    2. Pressing the print screen on your keyboard (usually next to the F12 key):

    3. Opening Microsoft Word and clicking on Edit|Paste
    4. A screen shot will appear
    5. Press enter twice and type in your name and today's date.
    6. Print the file and write a page number on the bottom corner.
  2. Also provide a screen print showing the bookmarks you saved in each task:
    1. Open Internet Explorer
    2. Click on the Favorites menu and make sure your bookmarks are visible on the screen
    3. Repeat steps 1.2 to 1.6 above
  3. Finally provide a screen print showing downloaded and saved attachments for each task:
    1. Open your folder where your attachments are saved (go through My Computer or My Documents)
    2. Repeat steps 1.2 to 1.6 above
  4. Ask your tutor to provide you with a tutor observation record to add to your portfolio.

Arrange all your printouts from each assessment task, the quiz, screen prints and observation record in this order. Check the page numbering and then update the criteria checklists as shown in this table. Ask your tutor if you need help with this:
